Why Choose Contact Lenses?

Philadelphia Eye Associates offers the latest technologies for correcting common vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Today, contact lenses are available in a wide array of prescriptions, including bifocals.

Contact lenses can be great for anyone with an active lifestyle, athletes, or those who simply prefer the freedom of not wearing glasses. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried contacts before; we will be with you every step of the way, including teaching you how to apply and remove your lenses!

Contact Lens Frequently Asked Questions

Almost anyone can be fit with contact lenses, even if you have a high prescription or corneal condition. In fact, many patients with high prescriptions or corneal disease will see much better with contact lenses than they will with glasses.

Yes. Eyes with keratoconus can be fitted with specialty contact lens designs including custom rigid gas permeable, hybrid, custom toric, and scleral lenses. Scleral lenses have made it possible to fit larger diameter hard contacts on patients with otherwise difficult to fit corneal shapes or scars. Digital manufacturing technology and hyper-oxygen permeable materials enable us to rehabilitate vision in patients with previously untreatable conditions. These larger lenses are fluid filled, preventing dryness, therefore extremely comfortable and offer excellent vision. Many scleral lenses can also be made with a bifocal.

Patients with the following eye conditions may benefit from wearing specialty contact lenses:

  • Keratoconus
  • Severe Dry Eye
  • Soft contact lens overwear and intolerance
  • Irregular Astigmatism
  • Corneal Scarring
  • Post-LASIK Ecstasia
  • Neurotrophic Keratitis
  • Herpetic Keratitis
  • Recurrent Corneal Erosions
  • Sjogren’s Disease
  • Exposure Keratitis

For patients 40 and above, there has never been a more opportune moment to wear contact lenses. Recent progress in materials and manufacturing techniques have led to bifocal correction directly into contact lenses. This innovation provides exceptional clarity for both distance and near vision.

The cost of fitting and contact lenses is often covered in part or in full by medical and/or vision insurances for patients who have medical eye conditions that require the use of a contact lens to achieve functional vision. If you have a medical eye condition causing reduced vision that is only correctable with contact lenses, the use of contact lenses is not considered “cosmetic,” and these services may be covered by your insurance.
