Corneal Transplants – DMEK, DSEK, DALK, PK

Closeup of a Cornea

A corneal transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at replacing damaged or diseased corneal tissue. This procedure can restore vision, alleviate pain, and improve the appearance of the eye.

Different Types of Corneal Transplant Surgeries

There are various corneal transplant techniques depending on the specific condition and needs of the patient. Our fellowship-trained corneal surgeons will assess your case and recommend the most appropriate treatment option to achieve the best possible outcome for your vision and eye health.

DMEK involves replacing only the innermost layers of the cornea, including the endothelium and Descemet’s membrane. This technique offers faster visual recovery and better visual outcomes compared to traditional full-thickness transplants.

DSEK focuses on replacing the innermost layers of the cornea. It is similar to DMEK, but involves transplanting a slightly thicker layer of tissue, resulting in slightly slower visual recovery.

DALK replaces the anterior layers of the cornea, while leaving the patient’s innermost layers of the cornea intact. This procedure is typically used for conditions that affect the front of the cornea, like scars from prior infections. By preserving the patient’s endothelial layer, DALK maintains a better safety profile with a decreased risk of surgical complications or long term corneal rejection.

PK is a traditional full-thickness corneal transplant procedure that involves replacing the entire cornea, including all layers, with a donor cornea. This technique is suitable for a wide range of corneal conditions, including severe corneal scarring or thinning.
